Altered plasma serine and 1-deoxydihydroceramide profiles are associated with diabetic neuropathy in type 2 diabetes and obesity

V. Fridman et al.

Summary: Recent studies suggest that atypical 1-deoxysphingolipids lacking the C1 hydroxyl group may be associated with diabetic neuropathy. Specific plasma 1-deoxysphingolipids may be linked to the severity of DN, while alterations in plasma serine and alanine could relate to the elevation of 1-deoxysphingolipids in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Mini review: Lipids in Peripheral Nerve Disorders

Th. Hornemann

Summary: Neurons are polarized cells responsible for receiving, conducting, and transmitting signals. The peripheral nervous system serves as a relay between the central nervous system and limbs/organs, and is vulnerable to genetic, metabolic, and environmental factors. Lipids play a crucial role in nerves, but their involvement in peripheral nervous system disorders is not well understood.

High Dietary Fat Consumption Impairs Axonal Mitochondrial Function In Vivo

Marija Sajic et al.

Summary: Peripheral neuropathy (PN) is a common complication in patients with prediabetes and Type 2 diabetes (T2D) and is often associated with dyslipidemia and mitochondrial dysfunction. Studies on a high-fat diet mouse model of prediabetes showed that dyslipidemia led to reduced mitochondrial membrane potential and impaired nerve impulse conduction. These results suggest that mitochondrial dysfunction may contribute to the pathogenesis of PN in prediabetes.

Plasma lipid metabolites associate with diabetic polyneuropathy in a cohort with type 2 diabetes

Amy E. Rumora et al.

Summary: The study suggests that diabetic polyneuropathy in type 2 diabetes is associated with novel alterations in plasma metabolites related to lipid metabolism. Findings also indicate changes in plasma lipid metabolites, including abundance, chain length, and saturation of free fatty acids in type 2 diabetes participants. Additionally, the presence of diabetic polyneuropathy impacts the abundance of complex plasma lipids, such as acylcarnitines and sphingolipids.

Optimal Cut-Off Values of Visceral Fat Area for Predicting Metabolic Syndrome Among Type 2 Diabetes Patients in Ningbo, China

Xi Yang et al.

Summary: The study found that visceral fat area (VFA) was closely related to metabolic syndrome (MetS) in type 2 diabetes (T2D) patients in Ningbo, China, and could serve as an independent predictor of MetS. Analysis revealed that the optimal cut-off values for VFA to predict MetS in male and female patients were 84.7 cm² and 81.1 cm², respectively.
