Sharp boundary formation and invasion between spatially adjacent periodical cicada broods

Geunho Kye et al.

Summary: Periodical cicadas are high-density, long-living insects that spend most of their lives underground feeding on plant roots before emerging for mating and oviposition. Populations are organized into synchronized broods with distinct boundaries, and competition and dispersal play important roles in maintaining stable coexistence of different broods in spatially separated patches.

Eight-year periodical outbreaks of the train millipede

Summary: Periodical cicadas are the only confirmed periodical animals with long life cycles, while in Japan, an 8-year periodicity has been suggested in a species of train millipedes, the first confirmed case of periodical non-insect arthropods.

Whole-genome characterization of chronological age-associated changes in methylome and circular RNAs in moso bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis) from vegetative to floral growth

Zeyu Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that CHH methylation gradually accumulates during the transition from vegetative to reproductive growth in moso bamboo, with differentially methylated regions mainly occurring at transcription start and termination sites. Genes with CG methylation changes are enriched in 'vegetative to reproductive phase transition of meristem' GO categories, while circRNA flanking introns are hypermethylated and enriched in LTR retrotransposons.
