TARGIT-R (Retrospective): 5-Year Follow-Up Evaluation of Intraoperative Radiation Therapy (IORT) for Breast Cancer Performed in North America

Stephanie A. Valente et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the North American experience of intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) for breast cancer treatment and found a 5-year ipsilateral breast tumor recurrence rate of 6.6%, with a rate of 3.9% for patients compliant with endocrine therapy (ET) during primary IORT. These rates differ slightly from recent results of randomized IORT trials and are notably higher than previous studies using whole-breast radiotherapy for early-stage breast cancer.

Intraoperative irradiation for early breast cancer (ELIOT): long-term recurrence and survival outcomes from a single-centre, randomised, phase 3 equivalence trial

Roberto Orecchia et al.

Summary: The long-term results of the trial confirmed a higher rate of ipsilateral breast tumor recurrence in the ELIOT group compared to the WBI group, while overall survival rates were similar between the two groups. ELIOT may be considered for selected low-risk patients.
