Evaluation of the Whole Body Spine Response to Sub-Injurious Vertical Loading

Kyle A. Ott et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the spinal response of seated occupants to under-body blast loading, finding that the spine response is sensitive to changes in time-to-peak and the presence of personal protective equipment, but largely insensitive to changes in floor loading. Data from the experiments were used to develop response corridors for evaluating new test models used as human surrogates in high-rate vertical loading experiments.

Mechanisms and timing of injury to the thoracic, lumbar and sacral spine in simulated underbody blast PMHS impact tests

Karthik Somasundaram et al.

Summary: This study focused on simulating underbody blast loading conditions and examining the mechanisms of injury in the thoracic, lumbar and sacral spine. Utilizing PMHS experiments, researchers identified the timing and mechanisms of spine injuries, attributing them to axial compression through the pelvis and flexion moment due to the offset in the center of gravity of the torso. The injury timing estimation techniques discussed in the study provide an alternative to traditional methods of estimating fractures.

Pelvic Injury Risk Curves for the Military Populations From Lateral Impact

Narayan Yoganandan et al.

Summary: Pelvic injury risk curves (IRCs) under lateral impacts have been developed in this study, which can be used for assessing the crashworthiness of future generation military vehicles. The introduction of covariates such as BMI, sex, and total body mass quantified their contributions to injury risk assessment.

Dynamic Response of the Thoracolumbar and Sacral Spine to Simulated Underbody Blast Loading in Whole Body Post Mortem Human Subject Tests

Donald Sherman et al.

Summary: The study found a significant reduction in spine response when wearing personal protective equipment in a simulated underbody blast environment. Additionally, longer duration seat pulses were also shown to reduce the likelihood of spinal injuries.
