Polycrystalline Covalent Organic Framework Films Act as Adsorbents, Not Membranes

Julie L. Fenton et al.

Summary: Covalent organic framework (COF) membranes function as adsorbents rather than size-sieving membranes. Adsorption of various dyes by COFs shows high capacity and diverse affinities, driven by variable entropic gains. Further examination of the COF membrane literature is necessary, as separations based on differential transport through 2D COF pores remain an important yet unrealized frontier.

Understanding the Ion Transport Behavior across Nanofluidic Membranes in Response to the Charge Variations

Linxiao Hou et al.

Summary: This study decouples the effects of charge density from pore structure using a multivariate strategy to construct covalent organic framework-based membranes. The impact of charged sites density in nanofluidic membranes on ion transport activity, particularly focusing on Li+ and Mg2+ ions relevant to salt-lake lithium mining challenge, is systematically investigated. The synthesized membranes show outstanding selectivity for Li+ over Mg2+ and operational stability, making them potential candidates for lithium extraction and other controlled separation processes.

Mapping Grains, Boundaries, and Defects in 2D Covalent Organic Framework Thin Films

Ioannina Castano et al.

Summary: Researchers have successfully overcome the challenge of acquiring high-resolution images of 2D COF films by using low electron flux imaging conditions and high-speed direct electron counting detectors. They have developed a Fourier mapping technique to rapidly extract nanoscale structural information, allowing for analysis of polycrystalline domain orientations and quantification of average domain sizes. Additionally, the technique provides information on various defects in the films, such as overlapping grains and different types of grain boundaries, shedding light on the fundamental microstructure and crystallographic underpinnings of 2D COF films.
