Hydrogen-Bonding-Assisted Cationic Aqua Palladium(II) Complex Enables Highly Efficient Asymmetric Reactions in Water

Taku Kitanosono et al.

Summary: Metal-bound water molecules have been recognized as a new aspect of soft Lewis acid catalysis. A chiral palladium aqua complex was constructed using a chiral ligand and hydrogen-bond donor, allowing efficient functionalization of carbon-hydrogen bonds of indoles in water. The use of aqueous environments enabled highly enantioselective reactions of sigma-indolylpalladium intermediates, presenting a potentially powerful approach for organometallic transformations under mild conditions.

Ni-Catalyzed Formal Cross-Electrophile Coupling of Alcohols with Aryl Halides

Quan Lin et al.

Summary: A new method was developed for direct coupling of unactivated alcohols with aryl halides through in situ halogenation/reductive coupling, forming Csp2-Csp3 bonds. This method enables rapid transformation of a wide range of alcohols to their bromide counterparts, suitable for arylation of complex alcohols without the need for prepreparation of alkyl halides.

Catalytic Aldehyde and Alcohol Arylation Reactions Facilitated by a 1,5-Diaza-3,7-diphosphacyclooctane Ligand

Eric S. Isbrandt et al.

Summary: This catalytic method allows access to secondary alcohols through the coupling of aryl iodides, with the ability to use either aldehydes or alcohols as reactants for reductive or redox-neutral transformations. The use of a P2N2 ligand previously unrecognized in similar reactions helps avoid detrimental pathways. An interrupted carbonyl-Heck type mechanism is proposed to explain the process of new C-C bond formation.

Nickel-catalyzed reductive coupling of unactivated alkyl bromides and aliphatic aldehydes

Cole L. Cruz et al.

Summary: A mild and convenient coupling reaction between aliphatic aldehydes and unactivated alkyl bromides has been developed using a common Ni(II) precatalyst and a readily available bioxazoline ligand, affording silyl-protected secondary alcohols. The reaction is operationally simple, utilizes Mn as a stoichiometric reductant, and tolerates a wide range of functional groups. The presence of 1,5-hexadiene as an additive plays a crucial role in optimizing yields.

Origin of enantioselectivity reversal in Lewis acid-catalysed Michael additions relying on the same chiral source

Paul S. Riehl et al.

Summary: Enantiodivergence is an important concept in asymmetric catalysis, allowing access to both enantiomers of a product when only one enantiomer of the required chiral ligand is readily available. This study focuses on elucidating the origin of metal-controlled enantioselectivity reversal, showing that specific interactions between the substrate and ligand depend on the ionic radius of the metal catalyst. This research has the potential to enhance our understanding of enantiodivergent transformations and facilitate their future design.

Efficient stereoselective synthesis of chiral 3,3′-dimethyl-(2,2′-bipyridine)-diol ligand and applications in FeII-catalysis

Samuel Lauzon et al.

Summary: This study describes a seven-step synthesis of a chiral 2,2'-bipyridinediol ligand starting from commercially available materials, with the key step being the O-2-mediated oxidative homocoupling reaction. The complexation of Fe-II with the chiral ligand showed an unusual heptacoordination and steric strain caused by the 3,3'-dimethyl groups. Furthermore, asymmetric induction using this ligand was investigated in Mukaiyama aldol and thia-Michael reactions, showing improved chiral induction compared to a catalyst made from a different ligand.

Nickel-catalyzed formation of quaternary carbon centers using tertiary alkyl electrophiles

Weichao Xue et al.

Summary: The transformation of sterically hindered tertiary alkyl electrophiles under nickel-catalyzed conditions to forge C(sp(3))-C bonds and create all-carbon quaternary centers has received increasing attention in recent years. This process involves the activation of tertiary alkyl electrophiles through ionic or radical pathways, benefiting the formation of C-C bonds in coupling reactions and accelerating radical addition reactions.
