Contributions of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy in microplastic pollution research: A review

S. Veerasingam et al.

Summary: This review highlights the extensive use of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy in microplastic (MP) pollution research since 2004. Over 400 research papers on FTIR techniques in MP pollution research from 2010 to 2019 were identified, focusing on MP characterization, fate, and transport in various environmental matrices. The review provides insights into the current application of FTIR spectroscopy in MP research and future challenges for understanding the risk of MPs.

Are microplastics correlated to phthalates in facility agriculture soil?

Qinglan Li et al.

Summary: The study revealed the presence of significant amounts of microplastics and phthalate esters in the soil of two agricultural areas in China, with greenhouse soil having higher microplastic content compared to non-greenhouse soil. Furthermore, a positive correlation between microplastics and phthalate esters was observed in one area but not in the other, indicating a complex relationship influenced by various environmental factors.

Analysis of Fixed and Live Single Cells Using Optical Photothermal Infrared with Concomitant Raman Spectroscopy

Alice Spadea et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the first use of a novel completely optically-based photothermal method to obtain infrared spectra of biological cells and to combine it with Raman spectra at submicron spatial resolution. The new instrumentation is capable of analyzing subcellular structures, identifying protein secondary structures, and lipid-rich bodies on the submicron scale, showing great potential in cell analysis.

Sampling, pre-treatment, and identification methods of microplastics in sewage sludge and their effects in agricultural soils: a review

Pelin Koyuncuoglu et al.

Summary: Microplastics are widely detected in wastewater treatment plants and can be efficiently removed from wastewaters, but they accumulate in sewage sludge. Studies on quantifying and identifying microplastics in sewage sludge are limited and require further investigation. The economic use of treated sewage sludge for soil amendment creates a pathway for microplastics entering the soil environment, potentially harming soil safety and organisms.

Evaluation and optimisation of sample preparation protocols suitable for the analysis of plastic particles present in seafood

Julia Suessmann et al.

Summary: Small plastic particles are commonly found in marine and freshwater ecosystems and their inhabitants. This study tested ten extraction protocols for microplastics from biota in order to assess their suitability for digesting a wide range of seafood species. The most suitable protocol was found to be an enzymatic-alkaline approach, which efficiently digested the seafood matrix without significant additional cost or labor, with negligible degradation of most commercially relevant polymers.

COVID-19: Performance study of microplastic inhalation risk posed by wearing masks

Lu Li et al.

Summary: Wearing face masks has become the new normal worldwide due to the global spread of COVID-19. This study found that wearing masks significantly reduces the inhalation risk of particles, including microplastics, even after prolonged use. Different types of masks pose varying risks of microplastic inhalation, with N95 masks posing the least risk. Reusing masks after disinfection processes can increase the risk of inhaling microplastics.
