Spatial distribution and health risk of exposure to BTEX in urban area: a comparison study of different land-use types and traffic volumes

Ahmad Alahabadi et al.

Summary: This study measured and compared BTEX concentrations in different land-use types and traffic volumes in Mashhad metropolis, Iran. Benzene and toluene showed clustered emission patterns and posed carcinogenic risks to inhabitants. BTEX concentrations varied significantly based on land-use types, with the highest concentrations observed in Transportation and the lowest in Greenspace. Additionally, BTEX concentrations were higher in summer than in winter, and traffic had a significant impact on BTEX concentrations.

Recent advances in sample preparation techniques for quantitative detection of pharmaceuticals in biological samples

Nan Li et al.

Summary: The bioanalysis of pharmaceuticals has attracted much attention due to the growing demand for drug development and environmental concerns. The major constraints include complex sample matrices and very low pharmaceutical content in biological samples. Efforts have been made to overcome these difficulties, mainly through sample preparation techniques. Developing high throughput, automatic, on-site, non-invasive and in vivo analysis methods is recommended for both biomedical and environmental analysis. Recent advancements in sample preparation techniques for quantitative bioanalysis of pharmaceuticals in the past decade are reviewed, with discussion on the merits of each technique and novel approaches such as electromembrane extraction and microfluidic devices. The future trend is highlighted towards sample preparation techniques with potential for in vivo pharmaceutical analysis, with prospects including miniaturization, high specificity, and portability.

Polymer Ligand-Sensitized Lanthanide Metal-Organic Frameworks for an On-Site Analysis of a Radionuclide

Yuan-Jun Tong et al.

Summary: A new strategy utilizing polymeric ligands to enhance the sensitivity of a lanthanide metal-organic framework (Ln-MOF) to UO22+ was proposed in this study. The resulting fluorescent composite, PVTPcTb-TBT, showed improved detection sensitivity and selectivity to UO22+ compared to Tb-TBT, with a low limit of detection of 0.75 nm. Additionally, the strategy was successfully applied to on-site analysis of real water samples, showcasing its potential for practical applications.
