Constructing a Human Atrial Fibre Atlas

Caroline H. Roney et al.

Summary: Atrial anisotropy affects electrical propagation patterns, driver locations, and mechanics, but patient-specific fibre fields and measurements are lacking, making assigning fibres to models challenging. This study aimed to construct an atrial fibre atlas and develop a methodology for assigning fibres to patient-specific anatomies, finding that patient-specific fibres have a significant impact on arrhythmia simulations, especially in the left atrium. The study suggests using specific fibre fields for left atrium simulations and average fields for right atrium simulations to optimally predict arrhythmia properties.

Beat-by-Beat Cardiomyocyte T-Tubule Deformation Drives Tubular Content Exchange

Eva A. Rog-Zielinska et al.

Summary: The sarcolemma of cardiomyocytes contains important proteins essential for electromechanical function, with TT playing a crucial role in supporting electromechanical synchronicity within cells. This study suggests the presence of an advective component to TT content exchange, which assists in equilibration with bulk extracellular fluid. The mechanical state of cardiomyocytes affects the speed of diffusion within TT, with cyclic contractile activity accelerating TT diffusion dynamics.

Local hyperactivation of L-type Ca2+ channels increases spontaneous Ca2+ release activity and cellular hypertrophy in right ventricular myocytes from heart failure rats

Roman Y. Medvedev et al.

Summary: The study revealed structural and functional alterations in RV myocytes in heart failure, including cellular hypertrophy, disruption of tubular network, enhanced contractility, and abnormal Ca2+ release activity. These changes are specifically localized in microdomains, potentially leading to compensatory RV remodelling and arrhythmogenic risk in the setting of LV failure.
