Persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn

Erica Mandell et al.

Summary: Persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN) is a significant clinical problem with high mortality and long-term morbidity risks. Treatment involves lung recruitment, cardiac output optimization, and pulmonary vasodilators.

Summary: Systemic hypotension in persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn can lead to organ injury from poor perfusion and hypoxemia, requiring swift management tailored to each individual's physiology and echocardiographic findings.

The use of supplemental hydrocortisone in the management of persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn

Samia Aleem et al.

Summary: The study found that hydrocortisone receipt was associated with the use of mechanical ventilation, sedatives, and other medications in infants with PPHN, but not with death, chronic lung disease, or oxygen requirement at discharge. In infants with meconium aspiration syndrome, hydrocortisone may decrease the need for oxygen at discharge. Further prospective studies are needed to evaluate the effectiveness of hydrocortisone in infants with PPHN.
