Blending principles of petroleum coke and low-rank coal to prepare high quality slurries

Dongmei Lv et al.

Summary: The properties of petroleum coke have significant effects on the quality of slurries. Petroleum coke with oxygen-containing functional groups and small molecular branched chains can be blended with Hami coal to prepare high quality slurries. The aggregation state of the particles is the main reason behind the differences in the characteristics of slurries prepared with different types of petroleum coke.

Gel propellants

Manisha B. Padwal et al.

Summary: The transformation of liquid propellant into a semi-solid gel state has great potential to improve the performance, reliability, safety, and environmental impact of rocket and ramjet propulsion. Research on gel propellants has a long history, with significant advancements made in recent decades. The physical, flow, atomization, and combustion properties of gel propellants have been extensively studied to enhance their application in various propulsion systems.

Microstructure and rheology of shear-thickening colloidal suspensions with varying interparticle friction: Comparison of experiment with theory and simulation models

Yu-Fan Lee et al.

Summary: Two colloidal suspensions of paucidisperse, spherical silica particles with extreme limits of surface contact friction were studied to compare shear rheology and microstructure differences. The study found that shear-induced microstructures vary between suspensions with different levels of contact friction.

Fluctuations and like-torque clusters at the onset of the discontinuous shear thickening transition in granular materials

S. H. E. Rahbari et al.

Summary: The origins and spatiotemporal fluctuations of discontinuous shear thickening phenomena remain unknown. The authors numerically study the local injected power fluctuations across the discontinuous shear thickening transition, finding that rare fluctuations caused by frictional forces are governed by a simple fluctuation relation and the emergence of collective behavior in the particle's torque.

Secondary breakup of shear thickening suspension drop

Zi-Yu Wang et al.

Summary: The experimental investigation shows that suspension droplets with discontinuous shear thickening exhibit a hardened deformation mode when they fall into the airflow field. A dimensionless number N is proposed to describe the relative magnitude of the increment of viscous force and aerodynamic force during the secondary breakup process. It is also suggested to use N and the Weber number We to establish a secondary deformation and breakup regime map for Newtonian fluids and DST suspensions.
