Facilitating livelihoods diversification through flood-based land restoration in pastoral systems of Afar, Ethiopia

Tilahun Amede et al.

Summary: The pastoral systems in Eastern Africa have been impacted by frequent droughts and floods, leading to increased poverty and conflicts. By using water spreading weirs, we have introduced an innovative solution to convert floods into productive use in Afar, Ethiopia. This intervention has transformed abandoned fields into productive landscapes within 3 years, with different crop management zones and increased biomass yield. The use of land suitability maps and collaboration between various stakeholders have contributed to the success of this innovation. However, the long-term occupation and ownership of communal land may have implications for communal territories and social cohesion.

The impacts of Acacia decurrens plantations on livelihoods in rural Ethiopia

Zerihun Nigussie et al.

Summary: The study found that small-scale tree plantations have brought benefits to farmers in terms of increased income, job opportunities, and improved social life. However, associated risks such as rising food prices and child labor issues need to be addressed. More measures are necessary to balance food security and plantation systems for economically disadvantaged farmers to participate effectively.
