Light-driven Locomotion of Underwater Bubbles on Ultrarobust Paraffin-impregnated Laser-ablated Fe3O4-doped Slippery Surfaces

Zhouchen Huang et al.

Summary: This study presents a light-responsive underwater bubble manipulation technique that allows precise control of bubbles underwater with self-healing capabilities. By manipulating the light source, it is possible to achieve both movement and fixation of bubbles on different paths, which could enhance their applications in optofluidics and all-optical modulators.

In Situ Tuning Underwater Bubble Movement on Slippery Lubricant-Infused Anisotropic Microgrooved Surface by Unidirectional Mechanical Strain

Yunlong Jiao et al.

Summary: Research focuses on designing and fabricating functional interfaces to control the movement behavior of underwater gas bubbles. A slippery lubricant-infused anisotropic microgrooved surface (SLI-AMGS) was successfully fabricated using femtosecond laser direct writing technology, allowing for reversible switching between underwater bubble sliding and pinning. By changing mechanical tensile strain, real-time dynamic modulation of underwater bubbles was demonstrated in different acid-based environments, showing potential applications in various fields such as underwater bubble microfluidics and microbubble robots.

Polymer dispersed liquid crystal thin films for sensing toluene

Wencui Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, a polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) thin film was prepared on glass substrates using solvent- and polymerisation induced phase separation, combined with soft lithography. The PDLC thin film was demonstrated to be a facile and portable sensor platform for detecting toluene with a low detection limit of 2.66 ppm by observing the director configuration change of the LC droplets in the polymer thin film. The sensor platform exhibited rapid response time and reusability for toluene detection.

Overcoming Limitations in Surface Geometry-Driven Bubble Transport: Bidirectional and Unrestricted Movement of an Underwater Gas Bubble Using a Magnetocontrollable Nonwetting Surface

Kiduk Han et al.

Summary: The introduction of magnetocontrollable lubricant-infused surfaces (MCLIS) has provided a key solution to the limitations of unidirectional and locally restrained bubble transport, allowing bidirectional and geometry-unrestricted transportation of bubbles by controlling magneto-responsive microwire alignments. This novel magnetic responsive surface supports anti-buoyancy transport and presents promising applications in microreactors and optical laser shutters in aqueous media.

Liquid crystal-based open surface microfluidics manipulate liquid mobility and chemical composition on demand

Yang Xu et al.

Summary: Controlling both the mobility and chemical compositions of microliter-scale aqueous droplets is crucial for next-generation open surface microfluidics. By using thermotropic liquid crystals (LCs) as the basis, this study successfully decouples cargo release functionality from droplet mobility, offering unique possibilities for novel open surface fluidic systems. Additionally, LC surfaces efficiently precipitate heavy metal ions in sliding water droplets to extremely low concentrations for over 500 cycles without pinning the droplets.
