Photoechogenic Inflatable Nanohybrids for Upconversion-Mediated Sonotheranostics

Keunsoo Jeong et al.

Summary: Hybrid nanostructures show promise for ultrasound-triggered drug delivery and treatment, known as sonotheranostics. While structures using plasmonic nanoparticles for photothermal-induced microbubble inflation for ultrasound imaging are limited in therapeutic applications due to short microbubble lifetimes and limited contrast, a photochemistry-based alternative has been developed. The introduced photoechogenic inflatable hierarchical nanostructure approach allows for dual-modal imaging and drug delivery deep inside tumors through a combination of upconversion luminescence and ultrasound stimulation.

Ultrasensitive ultrasound imaging of gene expression with signal unmixing

Daniel P. Sawyer et al.

Summary: Acoustic reporter genes can be imaged with high sensitivity using the BURST imaging sequence, enabling the detection of single cells under optimal conditions. BURST improves the cellular detection limit by more than 1,000-fold compared to conventional methods, by taking advantage of the unique temporal signal pattern produced by gas vesicles as they collapse under acoustic pressure. This technology has the potential to expand the use of ultrasound for non-invasive imaging of cellular functions, as demonstrated in vitro and in vivo.

Organic Sonosensitizers for Sonodynamic Therapy: From Small Molecules and Nanoparticles toward Clinical Development

Dong Li et al.

Summary: Sonodynamic therapy (SDT) is a novel noninvasive therapeutic approach that combines low-intensity ultrasound with sonosensitizers. Compared to phototherapy, SDT offers advantages such as deeper tissue penetration, high accuracy, and reduced side effects. The use of organic sonosensitizers is crucial for therapeutic efficacy, and nanotechnology holds potential for overcoming obstacles and fostering innovation in this field.
