Synthetic Bone-Like Structures Through Omnidirectional Ceramic Bioprinting in Cell Suspensions

Sara Romanazzo et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the creation of bone mimicking constructs using 3D printing of a novel apatite-transforming ink in a supportive microgel matrix with living cells, inspired by the bone biomineralization process. The technique allows for the fabrication of complex bone-mimicked constructs at room temperature without the need for invasive chemicals, radiation, or postprocessing steps. The mineralized constructs can be deposited within a high density of stem cells, directing the cellular organization and promoting osteogenesis in vitro, offering a new strategy for bone tissue regeneration.

Bioprinting for the Biologist

Andrew C. Daly et al.

Summary: Bioprinting, an emerging technology for building tissues from scratch, has the potential to revolutionize fundamental understanding in biology by exploring entirely new cell configurations. While commonly used in tissue engineering for therapeutic purposes and drug screening, bioprinting also provides opportunities within biology to investigate cellular crosstalk and morphogenesis. This Primer aims to provide an overview of bioprinting for biologists, focusing on extrusion bioprinting as the most widely used technology, and discussing alternative bioprinting technologies and future opportunities in biology.

Human heart-forming organoids recapitulate early heart and foregut development

Lika Drakhlis et al.

Summary: This study successfully generated three-dimensional heart-forming organoids that closely resemble early native heart anlagen, containing myocardial layer, endocardial-like cells, septum-transversum-like anlagen, and distinct anterior versus posterior foregut endoderm tissues. These organoids were used to study genetic defects in vitro and demonstrated a phenotype similar to cardiac malformations seen in transgenic mice with the knockout of NKX2.5 gene.
