Surface-assembled highly flexible Na3(VOPO4)2F nanocube cathode for high-rate binder-free Na-ion batteries

Bohua Deng et al.

Summary: A new type of flexible Na-3(VOPO4)(2)F cathode with nanocubes tightly assembled on carbon cloth is fabricated for the first time, showing superior rate capability, stable cycling performance, and good mechanical flexibility. When assembled with a directly-grown Na2Ti2O5 anode, a fully binder-free Na-ion battery is achieved with high working voltage, increased gravimetric energy/power densities, and the ability to power a LED indicator at bending angles from 0 degrees to 180 degrees.

Whole-Voltage-Range Oxygen Redox in P2-Layered Cathode Materials for Sodium-Ion Batteries

Xun-Lu Li et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates reversible oxygen-redox in a wide voltage range of 1.5-4.5 V in layered metal-oxide cathodes, attributing the stability to Mg-ions as pillars in the Na layer and the triggering of oxygen-redox to intrinsic vacancies in the TM layer. Charge compensation from Mn- and O-ions contributes to the whole voltage range, while Fe-ions only contribute to the high-voltage region. The reversible oxygen-redox is achieved by orphaned electrons in O's nonbonding 2p orbitals pointing toward TM-vacancy sites, while Mg-ions in Na sites effectively suppress oxygen release.
