Effective ion mobility in anion exchange ionomers: Relations with hydration, porosity, tortuosity, and percolation

P. Knauth et al.

Summary: This study examines the effective mobility of hydroxide, chloride, and fluoride ions in various anion exchange membranes with a backbone of polysulfone or poly (2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene)oxide. The concentration dependence of effective mobility is used to derive porosity, tortuosity, and percolation thresholds, as well as to plot ionic conductivity against hydration number. The linear relationships between effective ion mobility and concentration for different ionomers suggest specific boundary conditions experienced by mobile ions near immobile grafted counter-ions.

Multilayered PVDF-HFP Porous Separator via Phase Separation and Selective Solvent Etching for High Voltage Lithium-Ion Batteries

Van-Tien Bui et al.

Summary: The researchers developed a novel multilayer PVDF-HFP membrane with a highly porous and lamellar structure, offering superior electrolyte wettability and porous structure for better electrochemical performance compared to commercial separators. With a tensile strength of 13.5 MPa, the membrane's mechanical strength is close to Celgard type in the transversal direction. The multilayer membrane design allows significant improvements in both mechanical and electrochemical performance, making it a preferable separator for high-power and high-energy storage devices.

Cation effect of inorganic salts on ionic Seebeck coefficient

Yue Shu et al.

Summary: Ionic thermoelectric materials have attracted attention for their large Seebeck coefficient compared to electronic thermoelectric materials. The interaction between ions and polymer matrices can significantly alter the Seebeck coefficient. The study demonstrates that the softness parameter of cations plays a crucial role in influencing the Seebeck coefficient, leading to either positive or negative values. Additionally, the research provides a pathway for the rational selection of ions in ionic thermoelectrics to achieve tunable Seebeck coefficients.
