Delicate Control on the Shell Structure of Hollow Spheres Enables Tunable Mass Transport in Water Splitting

Ping Hou et al.

Summary: This paper presents a novel method to regulate the shell structures of hollow multishell structures, transforming the shells from solid to bubble-like and replicating them with narrow spacing through a simple phosphorization process. The fabricated CoP HoMSs with closely duplicated shells exhibit superior electrocatalytic performance in the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reaction, benefitting from the unbalanced Laplace pressure for increased gas release and enhanced capillary force for accelerated liquid transfer.

All-pH Stable Sandwich-Structured MoO2/MoS2/C Hollow Nanoreactors for Enhanced Electrochemical Hydrogen Evolution

Feilong Gong et al.

Summary: A novel design of MoO2/MoS2/C hollow nanoreactors with high electrocatalytic efficiency for hydrogen evolution over all pH values is reported. The introduction of sulfur vacancies on MoO2 substrates and the design of defective carbon shells enhance the stability of the electrocatalysts in acidic and alkaline media, showing potential for durable hydrogen evolution. The vacancy engineering can regulate the band structures, electron density differences, total density of states, and adsorption-dissociation ability of H* and H2O over the entire pH range, providing insights for the rational development of practical pH-universal electrocatalysts.

Formation of hierarchical Co-decorated Mo2C hollow spheres for enhanced hydrogen evolution

Yi-Zhong Wang et al.

Summary: Water electrolysis is a promising technology for producing clean hydrogen fuel, but lacks efficient non-noble metal catalysts for large-scale application. This study introduces a multi-step strategy to prepare hierarchical Co-decorated Mo2C hollow spheres for enhanced hydrogen evolution reaction performance through unique hollow structures and Co species incorporation. The as-prepared CMCHSs exhibit significantly improved HER performance in acid with a low overpotential and good cycling durability.

Compressive Strain Reduces the Hydrogen Evolution and Oxidation Reaction Activity of Platinum in Alkaline Solution

Li Jiao et al.

Summary: The study found that applying compressive strain can reduce the Pt-O binding energy of DPtCu3/C, thereby enhancing its oxygen reduction reaction activity and weakening the HER/HOR activity of Pt in alkaline solution. This suggests that the HER/HOR kinetics of Pt in a base is mainly limited by the overly weak Pt-O binding energy.
