Transfer of incentive salience from a first-order alcohol cue to a novel second-order alcohol cue among individuals at risk for alcohol use disorder: electrophysiological evidence

Kimberly A. Fleming et al.

Summary: This study found that alcohol consumption-related olfactory cues may reinforce conditioning of neurophysiological responses to a novel cue, especially in individuals with low alcohol sensitivity. These results support the hypothesis that the conditioned reinforcing properties of alcohol-related cues may be associated with an increased risk of alcohol use disorder, particularly in individuals with low alcohol sensitivity.

Summary: This article reviews the benefits of multilevel modeling (MLM) for analyzing event-related potentials (ERPs), emphasizing how it can extend the types of theoretical questions that can be answered using ERPs. The article also discusses reporting practices and provides tools for calculating effect sizes and simulating power curves. Ultimately, the review aims to contribute to best practices for using MLM with psychophysiological data.
