Suitcase Lab for Rapid Detection of SARS-CoV-2 Based on Recombinase Polymerase Amplification Assay

Ahmed Abd El Wahed et al.

Summary: A rapid point-of-need detection method for SARS-CoV-2 was developed based on RT-RPA assay, which can detect the virus in approximately 15 minutes. The method was validated in three different laboratories in Africa, showing high accuracy and potential for assisting in detecting COVID-19 cases in low-resource settings to speed up control measures.

In vitro susceptibility testing for black grain eumycetoma causative agents

Wendy W. J. van de Sande

Summary: Eumycetoma is a neglected tropical disease characterized by subcutaneous swellings caused by fungal infection. In vitro susceptibility assays have been developed for causative agents, mainly used for determining inhibition of growth by antifungal agents. However, a clear correlation between in vitro inhibition and therapeutic efficacy has not been established, requiring further research.

Identification and antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of Nocardia species clinically isolated in Japan

Masahiro Toyokawa et al.

Summary: The study aimed to analyze the antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of various Nocardia species isolated in Japan, and to evaluate the efficacy of MALDI-TOF MS for species/complex identification. Nocardia farcinica complex was found to be the most common species, with high susceptibilities to certain antibiotics. Using full-length 16S rRNA gene sequencing as a reference method, MALDI-TOF MS with a supplemental Nocardia library successfully identified 97.3% of isolates to the species/complex level.

Actinomycetoma by Actinomadura madurae: Clinical characteristics and treatment of 47 cases

Alexandro Bonifaz et al.

Summary: This retrospective study analyzed 47 cases of actinomycetoma, finding that the foot was the most affected region with a high rate of bone invasion. The most commonly used and effective treatment scheme was found to be streptomycin + sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim with dapsone, resulting in a 63% clinical and mycological cure rate.
