Rhodnius micki, a new species of Triatominae (Hemiptera, Reduviidae) from Bolivia

Yisheng Zhao et al.

Summary: This study describes a new species Rhodnius micki from Bolivia, provides detailed documentation of its male genitalia morphology, with emphasis on internal structural features. The validity of the new species is further verified through comparison of head shapes and wing venation patterns. Establishing a consistent terminology framework is crucial for future research on the homology of these structures in Triatominae.

The risk of oral transmission in an area of a Chagas disease outbreak in the Brazilian northeast evaluated through entomological, socioeconomic and schooling indicators

Summary: Chagas disease is a neglected tropical disease strongly associated with low socioeconomic status, mainly affecting Latin Americans. Serious outbreaks of this disease have surged in the semi-arid region of Northeastern Brazil, with factors such as socioeconomic status, education levels, and environmental structures playing a role. Residents with low income, education, and disregard for disease transmission modes may have favored the outbreak, highlighting the need for further prevention measures.

Triatomine and Trypanosoma cruzi discrete typing units distribution in a semi-arid area of northeastern Brazil

Nathan Ravi Medeiros Honorato et al.

Summary: Our study in different municipalities of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil revealed the distribution of triatomine species, their bloodmeal sources, and the DTUs of Trypanosoma cruzi isolated from them. We found that Triatoma brasiliensis is the most common species, infected with various T. cruzi DTUs and multiple bloodmeal sources, suggesting it may play an important role as a vector in both anthropic and sylvatic environments.

Summary: This study investigated the infection status of Trypanosoma rangeli in Brazil, revealing the host range and distribution of this pathogen in Brazilian mammals. The results showed that T. rangeli infected five new species and transmission was observed in the Caatinga biome. Furthermore, all four previously reported T. rangeli lineages in Brazil were identified, along with possibly two new genotypes.
