The effects of free surfaces on deformation twinning in HCP metals

B. Leu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of free surfaces on twin development using an elasto-visco-plastic fast Fourier-transform (EVP-FFT) polycrystal modeling approach. The results indicate that the creation of free surfaces can promote twin propagation and growth, influencing twin morphology and structure along the twin boundaries. Free surfaces can also invoke different slip activities in the twin and the surrounding parent crystal, leading to better agreement with experimental measurements.

Formation and annihilation of stressed deformation twins in magnesium

Karim Louca et al.

Summary: The study reveals that stress is higher in twins than in the parent grain during the early stages of plastic deformation, with a sign reversal observed for the resolved shear stress acting on the twin habit plane in the parent.
