Nanoscale segregation mechanism of cation dopant at the matrix/oxide interface in oxide dispersion-strengthened alloys

Zhi Dong et al.

Summary: The study investigated the cation dopant segregation phenomenon at the matrix/oxide interface in ODS alloys, and developed an analytical model to quantify the driving forces behind this segregation. The results were validated with DFT-calculated data, confirming the mechanism and providing theoretical guidance for designing high-performance ODS alloys. The research also suggested that chemically expanded lattice and large oxygen affinity can promote dopant segregation and improve the microstructure of ODS alloys, enhancing their strength and ductility simultaneously while solving the high-temperature instability of secondary oxide particles.

Achieving high strength and ductility in ODS-W alloy by employing oxide@W core-shell nanopowder as precursor

Zhi Dong et al.

Summary: The aggregation and coarsening of oxide particles at grain boundaries has been a bottleneck for improving the mechanical properties of oxide-dispersion-strengthened (ODS) alloys. In this study, core-shell nanopowder precursors were employed to achieve uniform dispersion of oxides in ODS alloys, resulting in a significant enhancement in strength and ductility of the alloy. This strategy has the potential to be applied to other dispersion-strengthened alloy systems, offering promising prospects for high-temperature applications.

Enhanced mechanical properties in oxide-dispersion-strengthened alloys achieved via interface segregation of cation dopants

Zhi Dong et al.

Summary: A new type of cation-doped W-Y2O3 alloy has been successfully developed, showing significant refinement and dispersion effects on oxide particles, while also greatly enhancing the strength and ductility of the alloy. The segregation of cation dopants at the W/Y2O3 interface plays a key role in these effects, impacting the chemical bonding and influencing the rate-limiting mechanism for W grain growth. This cation-doping approach has the potential to be applied to other ODS alloys for improving their mechanical properties.
