Reversible Deactivation Radical Polymerization: From Polymer Network Synthesis to 3D Printing

Ali Bagheri et al.

Summary: 3D printing technology has revolutionized the fabrication of advanced materials, but the challenge remains in printing polymer materials with post-printing transformability. Traditional radical polymerization used in photopolymerization-based 3D printing offers limited control over chain growth and architecture, unlike the reversible deactivation radical polymerization which allows for network homogeneity tuning and the production of reactivatable species for subsequent processes. RDRP-based networks have advantages over conventionally formed networks in terms of controllability and post-synthetic transformations.

Reconstructable Gradient Structures and Reprogrammable 3D Deformations of Hydrogels with Coumarin Units as the Photolabile Crosslinks

Chao Nan Zhu et al.

Summary: A hydrogel with reversible photo-crosslinks has been developed, allowing for the reprogramming of gradient structures and 3D deformations into various configurations. The hydrogel is fabricated by micellar polymerization of hydrophobic coumarin monomer and hydrophilic acrylic acid, with hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride micelles enhancing local concentration of coumarin units and improving mechanical properties by forming polyelectrolyte/surfactant complexes. High-efficiency photodimerization and photocleavage reactions of coumarins enable reversible tuning of the network structure of the hydrogel, which can be patterned with different gradient structures through photolithography for versatile functionalities.

Healable and Rearrangeable Networks of Liquid Crystal Elastomers Enabled by Diselenide Bonds

Ling Chen et al.

Summary: This communication demonstrates the successful integration of an exchangeable diselenide chain extender for the preparation of dynamic LCEs, which could be reprogrammed on heating or under visible light illumination. Furthermore, the rearrangeable polydiselenide networks could be utilized to develop self-welding technology for fabricating hierarchically structured LCE actuators with sophisticated deformability, without the need for any auxiliary reagents during the assembling process.

Robotic surfaces with reversible, spatiotemporal control for shape morphing and object manipulation

Ke Liu et al.

Summary: Continuous and controlled shape morphing for soft machines is achieved through a soft, robotic surface with large, reprogrammable, and pliable shape morphing capabilities. The surface consists of active and passive networks for muscle-like functions, allowing for smooth transformation of 2D sheets into arbitrary 3D geometries. This approach provides sufficient mechanical stiffness and stability for manipulating objects beyond shape changes.
