Heteroaggregation of nanoplastics with oppositely charged minerals in aquatic environment: Experimental and theoretical calculation study

Jiayan Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the aggregation behaviors of polystyrene nanoplastics (PSNPs) in aqueous phase with different environmental factors. It was found that pH had little effect on the fate of individual PSNPs under natural aquatic conditions, while high ionic strength (IS) caused homoaggregation. The results also revealed that electrostatic interaction directly influenced the stability of PSNPs in aquatic environments.

Sorption of reactive red by biochars ball milled in different atmospheres: Co-effect of surface morphology and functional groups

Xiaoyun Xu et al.

Summary: In this study, biochars were ball milled in different atmospheres to investigate their physicochemical properties and pollutant removal capacities. The oxygen-limited atmosphere of N2 and vacuum was found to be more favorable for reducing biochar size and increasing surface area. Different atmospheres also affected the formation of surface functional groups on the biochars. The removal capacity of biochars for reactive red was increased by ball milling, with N2 and vacuum atmospheres showing superior enhancement compared to air atmosphere.

Insight the roles of loosely-bound and tightly-bound extracellular polymeric substances on Cu2+, Zn2+ and Pb2+ biosorption process with Desulfovibrio vulgaris

Sihui Lu et al.

Summary: This study explored the fate and mechanism of metal cations biosorption in the Desulfovibrio vulgaris system, finding that EPS (including TB-EPS and LB-EPS) played a greater role in adsorption compared to bacterial cells. The adsorption capacity of Pb2+ on EPS was greater than that of Cu2+ and Zn2+, and the adsorption process was dominated by complexation and electrostatic interaction. The findings provide valuable information on the interactions between Desulfovibrio vulgaris and its secreted EPS with metal cations.
