High-performance in n-type PbTe-based thermoelectric materials achieved by synergistically dynamic doping and energy filtering

Hang-Tian Liu et al.

Summary: By introducing Ag2Te and dynamically doping silver into n-type Pb0.975Cr0.025Te, a peak figure of merit of 1.5 at 773K was achieved. The high value is attributed to the synergistic optimization of carrier and phonon transports. Ag2Te nanoprecipitates establish coherent interfaces with the matrix to induce energy-dependent carrier scattering and maintain relatively high carrier mobility, leading to optimal electrical-transport properties over a wide temperature range.

Efficient calculation of carrier scattering rates from first principles

Alex M. Ganose et al.

Summary: The authors developed a computationally efficient method for calculating carrier scattering rates of semiconductors, which shows similar accuracy to state-of-the-art methods but at a much lower computational cost. This approach enables high-throughput computational workflows for accurate screening of carrier mobilities, lifetimes, and thermoelectric power.

Demonstration of valley anisotropy utilized to enhance the thermoelectric power factor

Airan Li et al.

Summary: The authors experimentally demonstrated the effective use of valley anisotropy in enhancing the thermoelectric performance of materials with anisotropic Fermi pockets, showing a 3-fold increase in carrier mobility along the light-band direction compared to the heavy-band direction, accompanied by a similar Seebeck coefficient and lower lattice thermal conductivity, resulting in a 3.6-fold increase in room-temperature zT. Additionally, first-principles calculations of 66 isostructural Zintl phase compounds were conducted, with 9 of them displaying a p(z)-orbital-dominated valence band similar to Mg3Sb2.

When band convergence is not beneficial for thermoelectrics

Junsoo Park et al.

Summary: Band convergence is a strategy to enhance a material's thermoelectric performance, but the benefit can be negated by interband scattering depending on the manner in which bands converge.
