Computational Inverse Design of Surface-based Inflatables

Julian Panetta et al.

Summary: This study introduces a computational inverse design method for surface-based inflatable structures, utilizing inextensible sheet material and inflation to create double-curved shapes. The optimization algorithm improves the air channel layout, while a novel surface flattening algorithm is proposed for initialization. Multiple prototypes were fabricated to validate the approach and highlight potential applications.

The Design Space of Plane Elastic Curves

Christian Hafner et al.

Summary: This work introduces a method for designing curved shapes using flat elastic rods, allowing designers to determine the feasibility of shapes through visual inspection and efficiently calculate the geometry of structural elements needed for realization. The tool provides feedback on design feasibility and offers an iterative optimization routine to improve manufacturability while minimizing modifications.

Bistable Auxetic Surface Structures

Tian Chen et al.

Summary: The paper introduces a novel deployable material system - Bistable Auxetic Surface Structures, which can be flat-fabricated and deployed towards a desired double-curved target shape by activating the bistable mechanism of its component cells. A computational solution for the inverse design of the structures is introduced, where a library of bistable auxetic cells is precomputed to cover a range of in-plane expansion / contraction ratios, ensuring robust deployment.

Design and fabrication of multi-patch elastic geodesic grid structures

Stefan Pillwein et al.

Summary: Elastic geodesic grids (EGG) are lightweight structures that approximate designer provided free-form surfaces. Decomposing surfaces into smaller patches is an effective strategy to tackle limitations with more sophisticated design surfaces. This structure is suitable for various purposes like free-form sub-structures, panels, sun and rain protectors, etc.
