Natural and anthropogenic factors impacting northern Morocco's coastal archaeological heritage: A preliminary assessment

Athena Trakadas

Summary: The coastline of Morocco is rich in cultural heritage resources, but is being impacted by natural and anthropogenic factors. However, there is a lack of knowledge regarding how these factors affect cultural heritage assets. By focusing on northern Morocco, this study identifies factors that affect the coastline and provides recommendations for the development of management plans.

Alarming coastal vulnerability of the deltaic and sandy beaches of North Africa

Abderraouf Hzami et al.

Summary: The arid coasts of North Africa are experiencing severe coastal retreats and floods due to global warming-induced sea level rise, as well as interactions with climatic and anthropogenic factors. The deltaic coasts in Tunisia and Egypt are found to be the most vulnerable, with significant impacts on local water sources, food security, and population migration trends. The high coastal vulnerabilities are attributed more to damming and rapid urban growth in these regions over the past few decades, rather than solely to the effects of global warming.

Climate Change and Cultural Heritage: A Landscape Vulnerability Framework

Isabel Cook et al.

Summary: This study introduces a new framework for calculating vulnerability indices in archaeological resource management, which considers the vulnerability of landscape character areas to better protect archaeological sites. The framework involves two steps, first assessing the vulnerability of sites and landscape features, then calculating the vulnerability of each landscape character area based on spatial data and threats.

Evaluating sea-level rise hazards on coastal archaeological sites, Trinity Bay, Texas

Patrick Elliott et al.

Summary: This study uses the SLAMM model to evaluate the sea-level-rise hazards on coastal archaeological sites in Trinity Bay, Texas. The model predicts that a large area of marshlands will convert to tidal flats or open water by 2100, and around 31% of archaeological sites will likely be affected by erosion by the end of the century.
