Interstellar detection of the highly polar five-membered ring cyanocyclopentadiene

Michael C. McCarthy et al.

Summary: Through a combination of laboratory rotational spectroscopy and radio band surveys, 1-cyano-1,3-cyclopentadiene (1-cyano-CPD) has been detected in a starless cloud core TMC-1 at a higher abundance than expected. This finding suggests a rich aromatic chemistry in molecular clouds, which is not fully understood theoretically.

In search of phosphorus in astronomical environments: The reaction between the CP radical (X-2 Sigma(+)) and methanimine

S. Alessandrini et al.

Summary: Phosphorus is of interest in astrochemistry due to its biogenic nature, but its chemical evolution in the interstellar medium is not well understood. By studying the reaction between the CP radical and methanimine, researchers aim to fill the gap in knowledge about interstellar molecular reactions.

Pure hydrocarbon cycles in TMC-1: Discovery of ethynyl cyclopropenylidene, cyclopentadiene, and indene

J. Cernicharo et al.

Summary: This study reports the first detection of three new pure hydrocarbon cycles in TMC-1, showing that cyclopentadiene and indene are exceptionally abundant despite their large size. The high abundances of these hydrocarbon cycles, along with other hydrocarbons, suggest a quantification of hydrocarbon rings in cold dark clouds and the identification of intermediate species involved in the synthesis of aromatic cycles. Further studies are needed to explain the formation of five- and six-membered rings under the cold conditions of a cloud like TMC-1.

Interstellar Detection of 2-cyanocyclopentadiene, C5H5CN, a Second Five-membered Ring toward TMC-1

Kin Long Kelvin Lee et al.

Summary: Using radio observations with the Green Bank Telescope, evidence has been found for a second five-membered ring in the dense cloud Taurus Molecular Cloud-1 (TMC-1). Through additional observations, improved detection significance for the more stable isomer and evidence for several individual transitions between 23-32 GHz were obtained. The derived abundance ratios suggest a common formation pathway involving cyanation of cyclopentadiene by analogy to benzonitrile.

Detection of two interstellar polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons via spectral matched filtering

Brett A. McGuire et al.

Summary: Unidentified infrared emission bands are commonly attributed to PAH molecules, and in this study, two nitrile-group-functionalized PAHs were detected in the interstellar medium. The study also discusses potential pathways for gas-phase PAH formation from smaller organic precursor molecules.
