Epidemiological pattern, incidence, and outcomes of COVID-19 in liver transplant patients

Jordi Colmenero et al.

Summary: This study revealed that liver transplant patients have a higher risk of contracting COVID-19, but their mortality rate is lower than the general population. Baseline immunosuppression containing mycophenolate was identified as an independent predictor of severe COVID-19, especially at higher doses.

Successful orthotopic liver transplantation in a patient with a positive SARS-CoV2 test and acute liver failure secondary to acetaminophen overdose

Carol Rouphael et al.

Summary: A young female with acute liver failure due to acetaminophen toxicity and positive SARS-CoV2 test underwent orthotopic liver transplantation with a favorable outcome. It is recommended to conduct a full work-up for OLT in COVID-19 patients with uncomplicated disease, and to carefully interpret COVID-19 testing results and consider repeat testing in patients requiring urgent or emergent surgery.

Duration of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) Infectivity: When Is It Safe to Discontinue Isolation?

Chanu Rhee et al.

Summary: SARS-CoV-2 is most contagious around symptom onset, with infectivity rapidly decreasing to near-zero afterwards; mild-moderately ill patients can safely discontinue isolation after about 10 days, while severely-critically ill and immunocompromised patients may need 15 days. The longest duration associated with replication-competent virus is 20 days.

Protective Role of Tacrolimus, Deleterious Role of Age and Comorbidities in Liver Transplant Recipients With Covid-19: Results From the ELITA/ELTR Multi-center European Study

Luca S. Belli et al.

Summary: Despite concerns, data from adult liver transplant recipients with COVID-19 infection in Europe shows that age over 70, diabetes, and chronic kidney disease are associated with increased risk of death, while the use of tacrolimus may improve survival rates in these patients.

Early liver transplantation after COVID-19 infection: The first report

Anand Kulkarni et al.

Summary: COVID-19 has impacted solid organ transplantation, but transplant centers have begun performing surgeries despite the pandemic. Post-liver transplant outcomes varied among candidates and donors infected with COVID-19, highlighting the need for further research on the effects of the virus on transplant procedures.

Liver transplantation for acute liver failure in a SARS-CoV-2 PCR-positive patient

Lavanya Yohanathan et al.

Summary: This case report presents the successful liver transplantation in an 18-year-old African-American woman with COVID-19-related acute liver failure despite ongoing SARS-CoV-2 PCR positivity. The patient met criteria for urgent transplantation due to her critical condition, and after posttransplant treatment with remdesivir, she showed significant recovery within three months. The case demonstrates that COVID-19 with SARS-CoV-2 PCR positivity may not always be a contraindication for transplantation in cases of acute liver failure.
