Rights-Based Social Work and the Named Social Worker for Adults with Learning Disabilities: A Policy Intervention 50 Years in the Making

Elaine James

Summary: There is a renewed interest in the reconceptualisation of social work with adults as a human rights-based approach, as evidenced by the pilot program in England where named social workers were assigned to adults with learning disabilities. By drawing on recognition theory literature and considering influencing factors like drives towards individualism and marketisation, this paper discusses the relevance of rights-based practice to contemporary social work policy.
