Cytokine release syndrome-associated encephalopathy in patients with COVID-19

P. Perrin et al.

Summary: This study found that patients with COVID-19 can develop a range of neurological manifestations, including various symptoms and laboratory abnormalities, with brain magnetic resonance imaging showing different brain abnormalities. Treatment with corticosteroids and intravenous immunoglobulins may help in the rapid recovery from neurological disturbances.

The potential neurological effect of the COVID-19 vaccines: A review

Lu Lu et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 has prompted the development of various types of vaccines, with nucleic acid vaccines being a next-generation platform. Despite concerns about adverse effects, current evidence suggests a minor risk of neurological disorders from these vaccines. Long-term effects still require further observation.

Brain dysfunction in COVID-19 and CAR-T therapy: cytokine storm-associated encephalopathy

Umberto Pensato et al.

Summary: COVID-19-related encephalopathy and ICANS share overlapping clinical features, including frontal lobe dysfunction and elevated cytokine levels. Both conditions show a direct correlation between cytokine storm intensity and severity of neurological manifestations. Additionally, other encephalopathies associated with cytokine storm exhibit similar clinical and investigative findings.

Hyperacute reversible encephalopathy related to cytokine storm following COVID-19 vaccine

Luca Baldelli et al.

Summary: The first case of hyperacute reversible encephalopathy following COVID-19 vaccination is described, with the patient presenting with acute onset encephalopathy characterized by agitation and confusion. High dosage steroid therapy led to rapid response and complete remission within 3 days from onset, indicating a potential association between the clinical manifestation and systemic/CSF cytokine hyperproduction responsive to steroid therapy. The occurrence of encephalopathy after vaccination may be attributed to an excessive innate immune response against the vaccine, particularly in predisposed patients susceptible to autoimmunity.
