The evolution of empirical adaptation research in the global South from 2010 to 2020

Katharine Vincent et al.

Summary: This paper conducts a scoping review of empirical adaptation research in the global South from 2010 to 2020, finding that previous calls for increased empirical research have been met. While research covers policy, practice, and different scales, there are still significant gaps in studies on sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East/North Africa regions.

Mapping the evolution and current trends in climate change adaptation science

Johanna Nalau et al.

Summary: Research on climate change adaptation has been increasing in number and significance since the 1970s, leading to a vast amount of information that is difficult to manage. Despite the use of systematic literature reviews by researchers, there is still a lack of overall analysis of the current state of climate change adaptation science literature. This paper provides a multifaceted bibliometric review focused on the human dimensions of climate change adaptation, exploring how it has evolved over time in terms of disciplines, social relationships, and geographies.

Understanding the vulnerability, farming strategies and development pathways of smallholder farming systems in Telangana, India

Bhavana Rao Kuchimanchi et al.

Summary: The study found that households of different smallholder farming systems in India faced varying levels of vulnerability to climate change due to differences in perceptions of climate change exposures, access to livelihood capitals, and chosen farming strategies. Households farming only crops were highly vulnerable to increased temperature and erratic rainfall, while those farming both crops and livestock were more vulnerable to overall reduction in precipitation. Decision-making regarding farming strategies was a complex process influenced by several factors.

Differential household vulnerability to climatic and non-climatic stressors in semi-arid areas of Mali, West Africa

Alcade C. Segnon et al.

Summary: The Semi-Arid Regions (SARs) of West Africa are vulnerable to climate change impacts, including drought, food scarcity, livestock disease, and erratic rainfall patterns. Household vulnerability varies based on adaptive capacity, sensitivity, and exposure to different stressors, highlighting the importance of considering heterogeneity in adaptation planning to avoid maladaptation.

Adaptation interventions and their effect on vulnerability in developing countries: Help, hindrance or irrelevance?

Siri Eriksen et al.

Summary: This paper critically reviews the outcomes of internationally-funded interventions aimed at climate change adaptation and vulnerability reduction, highlighting the inadvertent reinforcement, redistribution, or creation of new sources of vulnerability. It suggests potential avenues for overcoming these issues, such as shifting the terms of engagement between practitioners and local populations, and expanding the understanding of vulnerability to encompass global contexts and drivers.
