The burden of disease in early schizophrenia - a systematic literature review

Benedicto Crespo-Facorro et al.

Summary: The burden of schizophrenia is significant even in the early stages of the disease, with early schizophrenia patients facing challenges such as higher mortality rates, psychiatric comorbidities, poor social functioning, and unemployment. Comparisons with chronic schizophrenia show a greater burden with longer disease duration, while the burden compared to other psychiatric disorders remains inconclusive. Additional research is needed to further quantify the burden of chronic schizophrenia and other psychiatric disorders.

Employment and earnings trajectories before and after sickness absence due to major depressive disorder: a nationwide case-control study

Christian Hakulinen et al.

Summary: Sickness absence due to major depressive disorder (MDD) was associated with increased probability of non-employment during and after the first sickness absence period. Men had lower probability of being employed 5 years before the sickness absence period due to MDD, while women did not exhibit this trend. Compared to the control group, men experienced around 34% and women 15% lower earnings 1 year after the first sickness absence period due to MDD, and around 40% and 23% lower earnings, respectively, 5 years after. More severe MDD and longer sickness absence durations were linked to lower probability of being employed.
