Class orchestration with technology has gained increasing attention in the past decade, yet there is still a lack of comprehensive understanding of the research in this area. Two main approaches to class orchestration were identified: one focusing on instructional design with technology, and the other on the development and implementation of systems or tools for orchestrating pedagogical practices. A systematic review of 43 studies published from 2010 to 2019 revealed common and different features of the studies on class orchestration, as well as discussed issues and implications for future research.
Class orchestration with technology is gaining attention in managing multiple learning activities at multiple levels in the past decade. However, there is hardly a holistic picture of the research about class orchestration with technology. To understand how class orchestration with technology could help pedagogical practices, this review article first identified two main approaches to class orchestration: one focusing on instructional design with technology for orchestrating the process of pedagogical practices; the other focusing on development and implementation of systems or tools for orchestrating pedagogical practices. Adopting a systematic review method, this study reviewed 43 studies published during 2010-2019, and presented how the studies on class orchestration have been conducted, and what common and different features of the studies on class orchestration are. Issues in the reviewed studies on class orchestration with technology are discussed. Finally, implications for future research on class orchestration with technologies were explored.
