A Text-Based Analysis of Corporate Innovation

Gustaf Bellstam et al.

Summary: This study develops a new measure of innovation using analyst reports of S&P 500 firms, providing a useful description of innovation for both patenting and nonpatenting firms. The text-based measure is strongly correlated with valuable patents for patenting firms, and can robustly forecast firm performance and growth opportunities for up to four years. These implications also hold true for nonpatenting firms that demonstrate innovation through novel technologies and business practices.
