Terror Management Theory and the COVID-19 Pandemic

Tom Pyszczynski et al.

Summary: Terror management theory focuses on the role of awareness of death in various aspects of life. The theory's implications for understanding people's responses to the COVID-19 pandemic show that fear of death plays a crucial role in shaping attitudes and behaviors related to the virus, regardless of one's beliefs about its threat level. Management of fear through proximal and distal defenses is discussed in relation to the impact of the pandemic on psychological well-being.

Health Adversity and Value Change

Wiebke Bleidorn et al.

Summary: The study found that although there were no differences in the importance of friendship and love for individuals with and without health adversity, the significance of social recognition decreased in the face of health problems and continued to diminish thereafter. This aligns with popular beliefs about changes in values when confronted with mortality.
