Autonomy, Social Inequality, and Support in Chinese Urban and Rural Adolescents' Reasoning About the Chinese College Entrance Examination (Gaokao)

Gloria Xiao Yu Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the perspectives of urban and rural secondary school graduates regarding the Gaokao and finds that students generally have conflicting views on educational aims and experience external pressure from the high-stakes examination. Inequality is further exacerbated by family background, resources, and teaching quality. Urban students receive more academic and interpersonal support, while rural students have lower mental health during their senior year of high school.
