Effects of SARS-CoV-2 mutations on protein structures and intraviral protein-protein interactions

Siqi Wu et al.

Summary: The study investigates 20 nonsynonymous mutations in the SARS-CoV-2 genome with incidence rates >= 1%, finding 4 mutations that cause significant changes in protein structures and impact intraviral protein interactions. These mutations also alter the hot spots within mutant complexes and are widely distributed globally with fluctuating occurrences. The findings suggest that SARS-CoV-2 mutations could affect viral protein structure, binding affinity, and hot spots, potentially influencing transmission, diagnosis, and treatment of COVID-19.

In silico comparative genomics of SARS-CoV-2 to determine the source and diversity of the pathogen in Bangladesh

Tushar Ahmed Shishir et al.

Summary: Comparative analysis of 64 SARS-CoV-2 isolates from Bangladesh and 371 isolates from 27 other countries revealed multiple origins of the pathogen in Bangladesh. Mutations in the isolates from Bangladesh, including missense mutations predicted to affect protein structures, differed significantly from the ancestral sequence reported in China. Notably, specific mutations in the nsp2 and spike proteins might have impacted the epidemiological properties of SARS-CoV-2 in Bangladesh.

Structure of SARS-CoV-2 ORF8, a rapidly evolving immune evasion protein

Thomas G. Flower et al.

Summary: The crystal structure of SARS-CoV-2 ORF8 was determined at 2.04-angstrom resolution by X-ray crystallography, revealing unique dimerization interfaces that may allow the protein to form large-scale assemblies, potentially mediating immune suppression and evasion activities.
