Migration towards Bangladesh coastlines projected to increase with sea-level rise through 2100

A. R. Bell et al.

Summary: The study presents a counterintuitive finding that in the future, despite intensified flooding caused by sea-level rise, the population in Bangladesh will still continue to migrate towards vulnerable coastlines. The model shows that while flooding accelerates the transition from agricultural to non-agricultural income opportunities, livelihood options are abundant in coastal cities, leading to some populations being "trapped" due to flood losses.

Predicting social and health vulnerability to floods in Bangladesh

Donghoon Lee et al.

Summary: Floods are the most common and damaging natural disaster in Bangladesh, with significant impact on public health, particularly among lower socioeconomic populations. This study assessed vulnerability in various aspects using 26 indicators across the country, revealing vulnerable zones in certain regions with potential impact on millions of people. Forecast-based equally weighted vulnerability measures performed best, with strong alignment between socioeconomic and coping capacity vulnerability measures and observed impact records. The composite social-health vulnerability index also correlated well with impact indices, indicating its utility in identifying predominantly vulnerable regions.

Climate change risk perceptions and agricultural adaptation strategies in vulnerable riverine char islands of Bangladesh

Zobaer Ahmed et al.

Summary: The study reveals that residents of riverine char islands perceive droughts, river erosion, and floods as major climatic risks. Furthermore, it indicates that char dwellers are more exposed to diverse climatic hazards. Additionally, the study shows that char inhabitants have employed various adaptation strategies in agriculture to respond to existing climate change risks.

Empirical evidence from Bangladesh of assessing climate hazard-related loss and damage and state of adaptive capacity to address them

Joy Bhowmik et al.

Summary: This study investigated the losses and damages experienced by rural communities in three vulnerable locations in Bangladesh, finding common non-economic losses and damages and how households improved coping and adaptation strategies through increased adaptive capacity. The research concluded that more investment in raising adaptive capacity is essential to minimize loss and damage in projected climate change scenarios.
