Mechanisms to exclude local people from forests: Shifting power relations in forest transitions

Melanie Pichler et al.

Summary: Forest transitions can contribute to climate change mitigation but may also impact local forest users, especially marginalized peasants and shifting cultivators. By examining historical sources and using the Theory of Access, this study reveals how legal, structural, and social-metabolic mechanisms exclude multifunctional forest practices during forest transitions in Austria and Laos.

The social and ecological costs of reforestation. Territorialization and industrialization of land use accompany forest transitions in Southeast Asia

Melanie Pichler et al.

Summary: Five Southeast Asian countries have shifted from net deforestation to net increases in forest area since the 1990s, driven by climate change mitigation policies like REDD+. However, this has led to exclusionary effects and spatial injustices. The study highlights the complexities in forest transitions and how they compromise the benefits for climate change mitigation.
