How Personality and Policy Predict Pandemic Behavior: Understanding Sheltering-in-Place in 55 Countries at the Onset of COVID-19

Friedrich M. Goetz et al.

Summary: This study investigated the factors influencing individual behavior at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, and found that both personality and government policy stringency independently predicted sheltering-in-place rates. Personality traits such as Openness, Conscientiousness, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism were associated with higher rates of sheltering-in-place, while Extraversion was negatively related to staying at home. Additionally, Openness to Experience and Neuroticism interacted with government policy to influence sheltering-in-place behavior.

Sandra L. Murray et al.

Summary: This study introduces a model of social safety system, explaining how people maintain a sense of safety in relationships when unable to predict the behavior of others. By affirming the well-intentioned motivations of agents in another world, people can escape the anxiety caused by unexpected behavior in one relational world.
