Enhance biological nitrogen and phosphorus removal in wastewater treatment process by adding food waste fermentation liquid as external carbon source

Xiao-Chi Feng et al.

Summary: The study investigated the feasibility of using food waste fermentation liquid to enhance biological nitrogen and phosphorus removal in wastewater treatment. Results showed that the added fermentation liquid could directly improve the removal efficiencies without prior treatment, and the optimal ratio of fermentation liquid to wastewater was 1/90. The high removal rates of PO4-P and NH4-N were mainly attributed to the extra volatile fatty acid and accumulated polyhydroxyalkanoates in anaerobic stage.

Impact of storage duration and micro-aerobic conditions on lactic acid production from food waste

Zengshuai Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, the effect of storage time on food waste characteristics and its potential for lactic acid production was investigated. It was found that the sugars in food waste were mostly consumed within 7 to 15 days of storage, and the addition of enzymes and micro-aerobic conditions can enhance lactic acid production by improving polysaccharides hydrolysis.
