Cytonemes with complex geometries and composition extend into invaginations of target cells

Brent M. Wood et al.

Summary: Cytonemes are specialized filopodia that mediate paracrine signaling in Drosophila and other animals. High-pressure freezing and EM visualization revealed novel structural features of cytonemes, highlighting their essential roles in cell biology and signaling processes. This study provides a fundamental basis for understanding the function and importance of cytonemes in cellular communication.

Helical Fasciculation of Bipolar and Horizontal Cell Neurites for Wiring With Photoreceptors in Macaque and Mouse Retinas

Yoshihiko Tsukamoto et al.

Summary: Bipolar and horizontal cell neurites adjust their positions at the rod spherule aperture, forming an alternating pattern. Some horizontal cell processes coil around rod bipolar cell dendrites, while others form hook-like protrusions encircling cone bipolar cell dendrites and horizontal cell processes. Loss of mGluR6 signaling may lead to imbalanced neurite growth and compensatory coiling.
