Epsilon-Negative Carbon Aerogels with State Transition from Dielectric to Degenerate Semiconductor

Peitao Xie et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the ability to achieve negative permittivity in carbon aerogels, with the value continuously adjustable by changing the composition while keeping the microstructure unchanged. Additionally, a physical state transition is observed with increasing carbonization temperature, transitioning from a low-loss dielectric state to a high-loss dielectric state, and finally to a degenerate semiconductor state.

Feel the light: sight-independent negative phototactic response in octopus arms

Itamar Katz et al.

Summary: The control of the octopus's flexible body is a challenging task, but a mechanism involving phototactic response has been observed, where the arms retract in response to increased illumination, possibly as a defense mechanism against predators. This response is mediated by the brain and is instinctive rather than consciously controlled, compensating for the octopus's poor proprioception.
