Growth in ataxia telangiectasia

Valerie A. I. Natale et al.

Summary: Classic A-T affects growth in utero, with children showing good growth in very early life but eventually experiencing height and weight faltering that persists throughout childhood and adolescence. Classic A-T patients were generally smaller, with their median heights and weights falling below the 3rd centile on CDC growth charts. Height faltering was more pronounced in females, and there was no association found between height and BMI faltering and number of infections.

ATM: Translating the DNA Damage Response to Adaptive Immunity

Thomas J. Weitering et al.

Summary: ATM is often considered the key regulator of the DNA double-stranded break response, yet patients with ataxia telangiectasia surprisingly exhibit only mild immunodeficiency compared to other DSB repair syndromes. Despite its numerous functions, ATM is not essential for acquiring sufficient levels of immunological diversity to prevent severe infections, although there is a notable antibody deficiency in ataxia telangiectasia patients due to disrupted class switch recombination.

Neurofilament light chain: A novel blood biomarker in patients with ataxia telangiectasia

S. J. G. Veenhuis et al.

Summary: The study investigated the biomarker potential of blood NfL concentrations in patients with Ataxia Telangiectasia (A-T) and found that patients with classic A-T had significantly elevated NfL concentrations compared to controls, indicating a potential correlation with disease phenotype.

Ataxia Telangiectasia Mutated Protein Kinase: A Potential Master Puppeteer of Oxidative Stress-Induced Metabolic Recycling

Summary: ATM, known for its role in DNA damage repair, is also important in general cellular recycling and targeted clearance of damaged mitochondria and peroxisomes in response to oxidative stress. Activation of ATM by oxidative stress is essential for the clearance of protein aggregates.
