Effect of microplastics in water and aquatic systems

Merlin N. Issac et al.

Summary: Plastics discarded into water resources break down into microplastics, which are easily ingested by aquatic organisms and can accumulate harmful pollutants, disrupting the biogenic flora and fauna and ecosystems. The distribution and impact of microplastics in the marine environment raise concerns for environmental and marine life.

More than 1000 rivers account for 80% of global riverine plastic emissions into the ocean

Lourens J. J. Meijer et al.

Summary: Research shows that plastic waste in the marine environment mainly comes from rivers, with a model approach predicting the probability of plastic waste entering the ocean and identifying regions likely to emit plastic into the ocean. It is estimated that over 1000 rivers globally contribute to 80% of plastic waste emissions, with small urban rivers being the most polluting.

Low microplastic abundance in Siganus spp. from the Tanon Strait, Central Philippines

Maria Kristina O. Paler et al.

Summary: Microplastic (MP) occurrence in the gastrointestinal tract of wild rabbit fishes from a marine protected area in the Philippines was investigated in this study. The results showed the presence of MPs in the fishes, but the abundance was relatively low. Caution should be taken when consuming these rabbit fishes due to the potential risks associated with MP ingestion.

The nexus of macroplastic and microplastic research and plastic regulation policies in the Philippines marine coastal environments

Van Ryan Kristopher R. Galarpe et al.

Summary: The Philippines is reported as a top contributor of plastic pollution to marine coastal environments, but research on macroplastics and microplastics is still in its infancy with methodological and technological constraints. While government efforts are underway to enforce plastic regulation policies, it is unclear if local research on plastic pollution has influenced these policies. The connection between research and policy enforcement remains unclear, presenting gaps that require further work to establish effective plastic regulation policies.
