The living state: How cellular excitability is controlled by the thermodynamic state of the membrane

Christian Fillafer et al.

Summary: The thermodynamic properties of biological membranes, particularly regarding temperature, pressure, and pH, play a central role in the excitability and velocity of living systems. Experimental data and literature review predict parameter ranges for membrane transitions, explaining changes in action potential velocity, loss of excitability, and triggers for action potentials. This study suggests that the thermodynamic properties of membrane interfaces, rather than specific molecules, control excitability in living systems.

Action potential alterations induced by single F11 neuronal cell loading

Summary: Several research programmes have shown the impact of Transcranial Ultrasound Stimulation on neuronal functions, but the underlying mechanisms are still unclear. A multiphysics setup combining nanoindentation and patch clamp systems allows for loading, imaging, and recording of single neurons in a perturbed mechanical environment, potentially important for studying the multiphysics of the brain at the cell level.
