Transfer of heavy metal along food chain: a mini-review on insect susceptibility to entomopathogenic microorganisms under heavy metal stress

Dun Jiang et al.

Summary: Heavy metals can have chronic toxicological effects on the growth and physiology of phytophagous insects, potentially affecting the effectiveness of biological control. Exposure to heavy metals may increase insect susceptibility to entomopathogenic microorganisms, leading to higher overall insect mortality. This new area of research could hold great potential for optimizing biocontrol strategies against economically and ecologically important agricultural or forest pests in heavy metal polluted areas.

Hermetia illucens adults are susceptible to infection by the fungus Beauveria bassiana in laboratory experiments

Summary: The mass production of black soldier flies for bioconversion of organic waste and feed purposes is increasing. However, research showed that adult black soldier flies are highly susceptible to the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana, which could have negative impacts on production systems.

Virus Prospecting in Crickets-Discovery and Strain Divergence of a Novel Iflavirus in Wild and Cultivated Acheta domesticus

Joachim R. de Miranda et al.

Summary: Orthopteran insects, with their high reproductive rates, experience boom-bust population dynamics that are ideal for short disease epidemics, but little is known about their viruses. Commercially reared house crickets were found to have both known and novel viruses, with specific adaptation to their distinct rearing environments. A novel Iflavirus, Acheta domesticus Iflavirus (AdIV), was particularly abundant in both wild-caught and commercially reared crickets, showing short, extremely divergent variation hotspots throughout the genome.

Probiotic properties of an indigenous Pediococcus pentosaceus strain on Tenebrio molitor larval growth and survival

A. Lecocq et al.

Summary: By adding lactic acid bacteria to insect diets, the growth of insect pathogens can be inhibited, promoting larval growth rate and survival into adulthood. Analysis of gut microbiota suggests that P. pentosaceus may have successfully colonised the larvae's guts.
