Projecting the continental accumulation of alien species through to 2050

Hanno Seebens et al.

Summary: The study used a new model to simulate future numbers of alien species and projected a 36% increase in established alien species numbers per continent from 2005 to 2050. Particularly strong increases were projected for Europe, followed by North America, South America, and Asia, while a decline in growth rate was projected for Australasia.

Impacts of the Invasive Seaweed Asparagopsis armata Exudate on Energetic Metabolism of Rock Pool Invertebrates

Carla O. Silva et al.

Summary: The invasive species Asparagopsis armata releases toxic compounds that have lethal and sublethal effects on marine invertebrates, impairing physiological status, increasing lipid content, affecting protein content and energy metabolism. Exposure to the exudate also causes behavioral impairment and reduced feeding consumption in marine snails.

Water temperature modulates mercury accumulation and oxidative stress status of common goby (Pomatoschistus microps)

H. C. Vieira et al.

Summary: Mercury is a common pollutant in estuarine and coastal areas, posing potential risks to aquatic organisms and human health. This study investigated the effects of different temperature scenarios on mercury accumulation, oxidative stress responses, and energy metabolism in Pomatoschistus microps after short-term exposure to environmentally relevant concentrations of mercury in sediment. Results showed that higher temperatures led to increased mercury accumulation in liver compared to muscle tissue, and oxidative damage was observed in muscle tissues at higher temperatures. The findings emphasize the importance of further research on the combined effects of mercury and other stressors, especially in a changing climate.

Effect of storage temperature and time on the fatty acids and nutritional quality of the commercial mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis)

Safa Bejaoui et al.

Summary: The storage time and temperature significantly affected the biochemical composition of Tunisian mussels, leading to reductions in biochemical compounds, changes in fatty acid composition, and decreases in nutritional quality and mineral contents. It is recommended to consume fresh and stored mussels for no more than 5 days in the refrigerator to preserve better quality and provide more health benefits.

How Does Mytilus galloprovincialis Respond When Exposed to the Gametophyte Phase of the Invasive Red Macroalga Asparagopsis armata Exudate?

Sonia D. Coelho et al.

Summary: Asparagopsis armata is classified as an invasive species in Europe, with its exudate potentially causing toxic effects on native ecosystems. Research suggests that exposure to A. armata exudate may lead to decreased cellular energy allocation, enhanced antioxidant capacity, and reduced attachment and clearance abilities in Mytilus galloprovincialis.

Asparagopsis armata Exudate Cocktail: The Quest for the Mechanisms of Toxic Action of an Invasive Seaweed on Marine Invertebrates

Carla O. Silva et al.

Summary: The red seaweed Asparagopsis armata exhibits strong invasive behavior and produces harmful compounds affecting marine organisms. This study focused on the biochemical responses of two invertebrates to sublethal concentrations of A. armata compounds, revealing different metabolic responses and neurotoxicity and oxidative stress as contributors to toxicity in one species. Changes in fatty acid profiles were species-specific, but both showed an increase in omega-3 PUFAs indicating a common regulation mechanism for inflammation and immunity responses.

The effects of the invasive seaweed Asparagopsis armata on native rock pool communities: Evidences from experimental exclusion p e

Carla O. Silva et al.

Summary: Biological invasions pose a threat to ecosystems through competition and habitat destruction. Asparagopsis armata is a globally recognized invasive red macroalgae species. This study evaluated the variations in native intertidal seaweed and macroinvertebrate assemblages in rock pools with and without the invasive macroalgae A. armata. The results showed that invaded pools tended to have lower macroalgal species richness and a more consistent and stable structure compared to non-invaded pools.

Antioxidant responses of the mussel Mytilus coruscus co-exposed to ocean acidification, hypoxia and warming

Fahim Ullah Khan et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the combined effects of pH, dissolved oxygen (DO) and temperature on the antioxidant responses of Mytilus coruscus, finding that all tested biochemical parameters were affected by these environmental stressors. Some parameters showed an initial increase followed by a decrease over time, while GSH content increased with decreasing pH, DO and increasing temperature. The mussels were adversely impacted by reduced pH, low DO and elevated temperature, as shown by the Index of Biological Response (IBR) results.
